Patricia Boyd-Wilson

We are a collection of our stories. Sharing those memories takes courage, but it also invites others to join you in those precious, hilarious, awkward, and growing moments. It might even help them share their own recollections.

Patricia Boyd-Wilson is passionate about engaging younger generations through her devotionals, poetry, and other stories. She weaves simple stories of baking cookies or more complex tales of surviving trauma into nostalgic journeys. Four generations of storytellers built Patricia’s powerful approach.

Her childhood was split into two worlds: a midwestern urban ghetto and rural Tennessee. Wanting to be sure her daughter didn’t find trouble in the cities, Patricia’s mother sent her to spend summers with family in the South. A 12-hour Greyhound bus ride transported her into another world where extended family members taught her life lessons even when she wasn’t supposed to be listening.

As a child, she thought those adults were telling stories. Later in life, Patricia realized what she heard had been folks living life. Small towns are hot beds for sharing the latest goings on. Being a quiet child that enjoyed reading in the corner meant that the adults around her would talk without concern for her overhearing.

Her latest book, Talk from the Family Tree, grew from combing through family photos. Patricia’s cousins have tracked their history back from their roots in slavery, verifying family stories that had been recorded. Identifying her great-grandfather in the pictures, Patricia was able to share her memories with family. This made her think about the need to capture the stories that built her background. Taking that as inspiration, she threw in some creative flair to craft new tales.

In this spotlight, Patricia shares tidbits from Talk from the Family Tree, including her grandmother recounting crazy adventures of her mother’s generation. She also discusses Fool Girl Fun and other stories and captures the cadence of speech and details of the room right down to the furniture polish in beautiful detail.
